Tiller Pronunciation: fēn niè. Branching that occurs below or near the ground in plants such as grasses. Produced on relatively large and nutrient-rich tiller nodes. The first-level tiller that directly emerges from the tiller node at the base of the main stem can produce new tiller buds and adventitious roots at the base of the first-level tiller to form a second-level tiller. Under good conditions, the third and fourth stage tillers can be formed.
